| Okay, this rank just makes the Covenant Military chain of command that much more complicated. How does this rank fit in with General, Field Master, and Field Marshal? Are these ranks / titles directly related to each other (General gets promoted to Zealot (Field Master) gets promoted to Field Commander gets promoted to Field Marshal)? | :Actually, ''Broken Circle'' only uses "field commander" in a lower-case, generic sense. It may be synonymous with Field Master but I don't think the title is even that specific. I'm imagining that it looks kind of like the Arbiter armor worn in the terminals set during the Prophet-Elite war (which wouldn't be surprising, since this rank dates back to those days). (I don't have ''Broken Circle'') In ''Halo: The Flood'' (2003: page 150; 2010: page 166), [[Noga 'Putumee]] is referred to as a '''Field Master''' (formal title) and as a '''field commander''' (a descriptor) on the same page. It could be that field commander is a descriptor or a casual synonym for Field Master. Later on (2003: page 217; 2010: pages 235-236), Noga is also referred to twice as a '''field officer''' and once as an '''officer''', which I suppose are also descriptors.

These Elites wear the golden combat harness. Though they're never explicitly referred to as Field Masters, the descriptors from ''The Flood'' make me think that they are indeed Field Masters.

| My conclusion is that '''Field Master''' is the proper title, and "field commander" and "field officer" can be used as descriptors. "Commander" and "officer" too, but they may lead to unneeded confusion with real Commanders (a rank/title of its own, in ''Halo 4'' and ''Halo 5'') and Officers (subclass of the Major rank). | The only reference for this being a specific Covenant rank is in Halo: Broken Circle during the earlier days of the Covenant, which was also held by a heretic. I think that we have to make the statement that this was likely an ancient rank and more contemporary uses of the term are relating to Field Masters like in Halo: The Flood. As all other sources seem to suggest that by the time of the 9th Age of Reclamation and later days of the Covenant that "field commanders" are referring to Zealots.
