What I want to know is how the game will handle dying for the Spartans, since the books already gave a count of the dead and missing soldiers before the Fall of Reach. Maybe they will just have them go the cryo chambers. Also, unless they have the Spartans leave before the Flood (which are confirmed for the game) come, I would have to agree about them possibly being Grey Team, or at least Grey Team being the only Spartans that are still left on the planet then. We know that the only two Spartans to go truly MIA before 2552 were Randall, in 2532, and Shiela in 2544, and Shiela died. That doesn't leave a lot of "dying spartan" slots to fill. Perhaps there ''are'' no canon Spartan deaths in this game? ==Shields==
== Non-Canonical Armor ==

I may seem ignorant here but what evidence is there that they have shields? I haven't seen any videos or interviews that show any proof of shielding.
In case it has not been pointed out yet, the armor worn by the 3 SPARTANs in Halo Wars is non-canonical in appearance and in function. The armor presented on the cover of "Halo: The Cole Protocol" was done by one of Bungie's resident artists, Isaac Hannaford, but the armor in Halo Wars is entirely different in appearance.

== Spoiler Warning! ==
Both show what is meant to be the MJOLNIR Mk IV armor, but one is produced by the creators of the Halo franchise, and one by a licensed third party. Given that Bungie-created materials supercede other sources in canonicity, it is apparent that the Halo Wars version is a fake. Why would this be?

When Spartan units go down in the game, you will have to wait untill their health is up to 50% or more then move near them with any other unit to revive them.
It was established long ago that the MJOLNIR Mk V was the first model to incorporate shields and the ability to host a Smart AI, and the Mk IV had no such ability. That would mean that the MK IV only had its armor to protect the operator, rather than the shields of the MK V and VI. It took the UNSC nearly 3 decades to get shields working in MJOLNIR armor, which was given to the SPARTANs shortly before the Battle of Reach.

When you first encounter Spartans in the game, 3 of them are already on the ground when the mission starts, they are -identified as Alice-130, Jerome-092 and Douglas-042, in the next mission you get reinforced by Spartan Group Omega, none of them can be named by clicking on the unit, they are simply named Spartan: Omega Group.
And yet in Halo Wars, the SPARTANs that appear already have shields and the ability for AI support, which should be impossible, since both features didn't exist until 20+ years later. This means that Ensemble has contradicted and outright ignored established canon. Interestingly, earlier in the development cycle, they said that the SPARTANs wouldn't have shielding, since that didn't appear until the MK V, and that they would heal over time.

But now, all of a sudden, they give them shields, which flies in the face of already established facts. Perhaps it was too difficult to balance them without shields, or they were afraid that players would be confused by the lack of shields? Whatever the reason, they took many functional and artistic liberties in regards to canon, and failed to make their Mk IV canonically accurate.

Its a shame that Bungie no longer owns the IP, for with this, existing canon will become convoluted beyond recognition. Signs of this have already appeared, for the armor worn by SPARTANs in "Halo: Spartan Black" is the MK VI, and it occurs before the Battle of Reach. But if it was canonically accurate, those SPARTANs would be wearing MJOLNIR MK IV, namely the one on the TCP cover.

The contradictions need to either be explained properly, or the audience must assume that new material simply takes artistic liberties to be appealing, and imagine the correct visual canon when viewing these materials.

At the end of Halo Wars, only the 3 named Spartans are with you, at the end of the game the Spirit of Fire has to Sacrifice it's FTL core, making the voyage home take "Years if not decades" and most of the crew are put in cryo.

So most likely the trip home takes just over 20 years, making the Spirit of Fire return after the events of Halo 1, 2 and 3.
