Well, it doesn't go very far into the future... and, it seems to imply a very low birth rate, which isn't consistent with the Halo canon description of "massive population surges"

And how exactly would humans that long ago make halo? I cant imagine cavemen making a giant space ring out of unknown materials, in outer space...an unkown distance away from earth, plus, other than the portal, there was no forerunner "relics" on earth. All of that plus, it contradicts already known information. So yes, that theory was, putting it softly, stupid.Papayaking 07:07, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

the forerunners were not a species but a group of species like the covenant.See that humans were part of the forerunner group and they were the newest addition before the firing of the rings. They somehow survived and the population grew and so on from there.
is that logical to anyone else?--Sangheili wunna be 19:18, September 13, 2009 (UTC)

:Huh. That...actually looks like a good figure! I thought it was a mistake at first, and was about to post a huge rant explaining how it could be higher than 20 billion because of selection protocols etc., but the logic turns out to be sound. For 150 candidates, Halsey would need a minimum of 39 billion records to select from. Taking away the 23 billion casualty estimate by Cortana, that would leave 16 billion. That may not take the devastation of Earth into account, but it's a lot higher than the 200 million estimate from bestiarum. -- <b><font color=indigo>Specops306</font></b> <u><i><font color=blue>Autocrat</font></i></u> <u><i><font color=purple>Qur'a 'Morhek</font></i></u> 17:55, 26 October 2010 (EDT)

::Just to add; the Encyclopedia clearly states that Earth's population is in the billions, and was not referring to the human race as a whole. :::The question is when. When was Earth's population listed as being in billions? Additionally, did it specifically said so? If the population was before 2552, then it is indeed reasonable as the Battle of Earth has not occurred yet. ::::The exact quote from page 282 reads; "Billions still live there despite the ongoing colonization of the stars." While the mention of ongoing colonization suggests that it is written from a pre-war perspective, it could just as easily be referring to the advancement of human civilization in general, or even the post-war colonization Halo: Reach has shown us. It's hard to tell, though I find the "200 million" figure, even post-war, to be odd. From what we know of the Battle of Earth, the Covenant weren't interested in killing humans as much as they were looking for Forerunner artifacts and uncovering the Portal, and most of the fighting too place in East Africa, less thick across the rest of the planet, with most battles in other locations far from civilian population centers anyway (under the ocean, Antarctica, ect). Thus I think that the "billions" figure would still be accurate after the attack on Earth. Might I even recall a quote by Joseph Staten in a Halo 3 ViDoc; "millions of people have died", not billions. It's a stretch, but I thought that might be worth mentioning. - <span style="color: purple; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 128%;">Halo-343</span> <font color="green">(Talk)</font> 10:22, 3 November 2010 (EDT)

:::::I would agree that the supplied quote was written from a pre-war perspective, that is before the HCW. Page 282 goes on as to stating that Earth's population was cut in half "the entire population of Earth was cut in half as the First Battle of Earth [sic recte Battle of Earth] began.". It does not however specify whether it means half of Earth's population were killed, or if a significant number were evacuated, although the latter is more probable, as the Covenant did not commence planetary bombardment, and the statement is in regard of the situation at the beginning and not the end of the battle. If this were to be the case, the population that were left behind/stayed back on Earth would be in smaller unit of billions (to put things into perspective, let's assume that Earth population was 6bil, thus 3bil were evacuated while the other 3bil stayed behind). Again, we should also be aware that the Halo Encyclopedia is not the definitive source of all Halo information; it is most likely that words were thrown into the reference textbook to make the subjects more interesting. It is known to be self-contradictory. Perhaps the best way is to include both references and mention the discrepancies?

On page 351 of Halo: Evolutions it says that "they will be left behind just the other twenty thre billion that preceded them were left behind." I know it sounds like a lot, but compared to how many people there will be in 500 years, it seems pretty small. Could it be military casualties or could have humanity suffered less then we thought? :I do like the idea of consistency among names, but, like Jugus said, "human" is never capitalized in any canon source. The English major within me cringes at the idea of capitalizing "human". :In response to the consistency argument, it's extremely common in sci-fi that alien species names are treated as proper nouns while "human" isn't (Mass Effect is a rare exception). I think it's the best to defer to canon in matters like this, especially when there's no conflict between different spellings in official sources. :Actually, Jugus said that we should avoid capitalizing "human". It is never capitalized in canon, so we don't need to capitalize it, either. --Courage never dies. 13:06, 23 June 2011 (EDT)
I honestly think it's sad as us being being Humans refuse to capitalize the word Human. "A Penny saved is a Penny earned"  13:08, 23 June 2011 (EDT)
Humans designed English under the assumption that we are all there is. "Human" is just a word like "person" or "ape". Humans are not considered a specific people like Americans or British, so we don't capitalize the word. In a science-fiction universe, multiple species are their own peoples and so are capitalized. I believe the word "human" is excepted because it already is a part of English with its recognized grammatical traits. Sometimes this changes for the alien perspective, but as "human" is the predominant spelling and the spelling used by those who have the authority to know (we wouldn't reference Jacob Keyes as Keezz), that is what should be our standard. --<b><font color="#800080">Dragon<font color="#3B3F42">c</font>laws</font>(<font color="#DE397E">talk</font>)</b> 15:53, 23 June 2011 (EDT)
Hyperforce
Why is hyperforce relevant enough to merge into this general article on humanity? I'd rather leave them as separate articles. Perhaps create a general page for Sports, with things like hyperforce, basketball, gravball, merged into that? In my dream, I am the star. Its me. -- <b><font color=indigo>Specops306</font></b> <u><i><font color=blue>Autocrat</font></i></u> <u><i><font color=purple>Qur'a 'Morhek</font></i></u> 16:45, 23 July 2011 (EDT)
Population I beleive that the total humans killed was 30 billion(23 by 2552 and billions more during the covenant invasion of earth) and the overall surviving may well be over 10 billion combining all the earths and all of the remaining colonies

I think the picture for humans should be replaced with a "cartoonish" picture like the others on the site. If this were a description of real world humans it is fine, but this is in-story so it should look like other pictures for in-story topics.Sallan (talk) 16:33, 3 September 2014 (EDT)-Sallan
:Well, the current image actually is in-universe, as it is from the live-action film Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn. So no, it will not be changed anytime soon. Plus, it is a nice image.-- 16:45, 3 September 2014 (EDT)
::It is nice. Images from Reach were previously used like an army soldier and a pair of civilians. They were alright, but I think the current one is the best. It captures human variation and simultaneously conveys the influence of a future militarized government.  <span style="color:red">Lord Susto</span> 18:09, 3 September 2014 (EDT)
:::I agree it works very well. It conveys that military aspect but doesn't have people toting guns or anything. Plus as Spartacus said it's in-universe so I don't see the problem. --<font color="MidnightBlue"><b>Jugus</b></font> <small>(<font color="Gray">Talk</font> | <font color="Gray">Contribs</font>)</small> 00:04, 4 September 2014 (EDT)
When and where did (modern) humanity first encounter Forerunner artifacts?
It seems like an incredibly important discovery finding Forerunner tech, and yet I can't find where exactly humanity first discovered Forerunner tech (or more accurately, "rediscovered"). Slipspace travel was invented in 2291, the first colony ships were unveiled in 2310, and the first wave of extra-solar colonization efforts was in 2362. At the earliest, humanity could have discovered Forerunner artifacts on extra-solar worlds as early as the 2310s. The Menachite portal complex on Reach could have been discovered relatively early on since titanium mining was a major aspect of Reach's colonization, so not long after 2362. Arcadia, which had exposed Forerunner structures in close proximity to human settlements, was colonized in 2429. This would be the upper bound for Forerunner discovery, and also the point by which the general human population would have been aware of the existence of alien civilizations.--File:PENGUIN4.gif|15px]]<span style="color:black; font-family:Verdana">Fluffy</span><span style="color:gray; font-family:Verdana">Emo</span><span style="color:black; font-family:Verdana">Penguin</span><small>(<span style="color:gray">ice quack!</span>)</small> 17:50, 28 February 2016 (EST)
Should this section be removed?
Modern humanity, Homo sapiens, is believed to have appeared in Earth's fossil record between approximately 100,000 and 200,000 years ago (an older branch of Homo sapiens known as Homo sapiens idaltu was believed to have lived as far back as 160,000 BCE). While the exact origin of humanity is a hotly contested paleontological debate, one theory is that the first humans evolved from a genus of upright ape-like hominids called Australopithecus (likely Australopithecus afarensis).
Homo sapiens is not the only species of human to have evolved on Earth, but they have either displaced or outlasted all other branches of the genus Homo, all species of which were once collectively known as "humanity". In prehistoric times, there was significant contact between anatomically modern humans and other members of the genus, both cultural and genetic, coexisting with species such as Homo erectus, neanderthalensis and floresiensis, and, based on residual genetic evidence, interbreeding with other species (1-4% of the DNA in European and East Asian humans is Neanderthal, while Melanesian people have 4% of Denisovan blood).
This section seems out of place with the rest of the article so should it be removed? I mean it's based on real-world human speculation about humanity's origin and evolution which pretty much went out the window in the Forerunner Saga. The Divine One (talk) 22:26, 11 July 2017 (EDT)
:I think the section makes it sufficiently clear it's the modern human scientific perspective rather than being necessarily "objectively" true in the Halo universe. --Jugus (talk) 08:58, 19 July 2017 (EDT)
