I think COLLAR refers to how the chestpiece fully surrounds the neck rather than merely ataching to the front of the armor. As such, it explains why the COLLAR pieces are larger, they can do so because they are held on more firmly and counterbalance the forward weight somewhat by having some of the weight in the back.
