The '''TR/9 Antipersonnel Mine''', otherwise known as the '''Trip Mine''', is a UNSC [[equipment]] item in [[Halo 3]].
===Design details===
 
The TR/9 takes a circular form, with six fins protruding off the side. The centre of the disc has another four fins that, when the mine is activated, rotate upward. The mine's activation also sees it light up and emit a high-pitched beeping noise. The mine can use trip wires or [[laser]] beams to trigger the detonator, when something large enough gets within range.{{Ref/Reuse|Enc09}} Despite its flower-like appearance, the TR/9 trip mine is not the [[Lotus anti-tank mine]].
==Background==
 
The trip mine can be activated by proximity or touch, but will not be activated by a crouched player. Once deployed, it can be identified by a high pitched beeping noise or by a distinctive flashing red light on its top. Its blast radius is considerably larger than a grenade explosion or rocket explosion allowing vehicles to be thrown into the air. It can be attached to vehicles and other objects and is often used to guard entrances. The activation radius is smaller than the kill radius. The trip mine can not be deactivated once deployed.  It will explode after about ninety seconds if nothing triggers it. However, it can be remotely activated by projectile [[weapons]] or [[grenade]] explosions.


===Usage===
During the [[Halo 3 Beta]], the mine did not have an up or down. In Halo 3 if placed upside down it will usually detonate automatically. It doesn't happen often but if it is thrown onto a strange angled surface while the player is running it may bounce and flip.
The tripmine is employed for defensive usage, and is used in siege warfare and guerrilla tactics. They are used in the defence of perimeters or placed alongside enemy paths.{{Ref/Reuse|Enc09}}


==Operational history==
In the final version of the game, a Trip Mine will NOT kill a fully shielded [[Spartan]] or [[Elite]], nor will it destroy vehicles in one blast. It has been significantly weakened from the beta, and it does not, by default, spawn on any maps in Matchmaking, save [[Sandtrap]], which is only in Social games. This can make it frustrating to get the "[[We're In For Some Chop]]" achievement, as it can only be achieved now in the campaign.
The TR/9 trip mine was originally developed for UNSC forces, though as with many pieces of equipment, was often stolen and deployed by [[Covenant]] loyalist [[Jiralhanae]] forces during the later stages of the [[Human-Covenant War]].{{Ref/Reuse|EVG}} Jiralhanae equipped with these mines were deployed during the [[Battle for Earth]] and [[Battle of Installation 00]] in late [[2552]].{{Ref/Game|H3|Trip Mine in-game equipment}} In the [[Post-Covenant War conflicts|post-war]] era, [[Jiralhanae Jumper]]s allied with [[Merg Vol's Covenant]] also employed the TR/9 trip mines.{{Ref/Level|HSA|Mission 16: Escape from the Southern Fields}}

*Sometimes, while playing in [[multiplayer]] or [[campaign]], players can either accidentally run or drive over their own trip mines or those of their teammate(s).
*A trip mine's distinctive beeping and orange glow makes it easy to detect.
*The trip mine will only stay active for 90 seconds before spontaneously exploding.
*Trip mines can be detonated from a distance by weapons fire, and are therefore only useful when unnoticed.

In earlier stages of [[Development of Halo 3|development]], the trip mine in ''Halo 3'' had a Covenant-themed texture, featuring purple metal and blue lights. *If you deploy a trip mine on top of a [[Man Cannon]], the mine will go flying out into the battle field. Though on the Beta, the trip mine would sometimes disappear entirely when thrown into the Man Cannon. It would still explode if someone or something were to go within the activation radius.

*Also deploying the mine in the general area where the Man Cannon deposits players will kill the next person to man cannon from the base. Don't do it to your own base if your intentions aren't being a team killer.

*If a deployed mine has not been detonated, it will self-destruct after a set time of 1:30. Prior to the self-destruction, the orange light on the mine will brighten and the beeping will speed up and make a whining noise.
*Deploy one on a freindly warthog and have the manned 'hog kamakaze into the enemy. (NOTE! You may have to shoot your warthog's mine to make it blow up)
*One of the most evil tricks, as Bungie mentioned, is to deploy a mine in the exact position where is spawns. Some players will notice that the mine is armed (by listening to it's distinct audio and visual cues), but most players will attempt to collect it, resulting a kill which would certainly not have happened if the player is attentive.
