Strongholds is the successor to 3-Plot Territories, and focuses on two teams capturing three static areas on the map to earn points.
Halo Wars 2
Capturing Zones
|playernumber=8
Three zones appear on the map, available for players to hold and capture. To capture a zone, at least one player from a team must be standing within its area for a set duration. If a player from an opposing team enters the zone, it becomes contested, and the capture is on halt until only one of the two opposing players remain in the zone. If an enemy's zone is uncontested, a player can capture the zone, but they must first remove the zone from the enemy team's possession and return the zone to a neutral state. If the zone is still in the process of returning to a neutral possession, and an enemy player returns to the zone and removes the player from the zone, the enemy player can "secure" the zone, which instantaneously returns the zone to the enemy's possession.
|maps=*Eden

Scoring
A team scores a point for every second they hold two of the three zones. The team that is only holding one zone do not earn any points. The mode was designed so that it would be difficult to control all three points at the same time without stretching one's team too thin. If a team has capture all three zones, they earn two points per second.

Victory
The first team that reaches the score limit (100 by default in Halo 5: Guardians and 200 by default in Halo Infinite) wins the game.

Variants
*Slayholds - A variant of Strongholds introduced in Halo Infinite that allows players to also earn points by getting kills.

Halo 5: Guardians
The following medals can be unlocked in the Strongholds gamemode.
Strongholds plays much like Dominion in Halo 4, where you capture a "base" to score points. In Strongholds, the first team to score 100 points wins the game. Scoring points requires teams to capture a non-moving base and defend it from the enemy team. The mode was designed so that it would be difficult to control all three points at the same time without stretching one's team too thin.

Medals
Strongholds returns in Halo Wars 2 as a gametype, altered to suit the needs of a Real-time strategy game. In Strongholds, UNSC and Banished forces fight to control points on the map. These points appear as minibase construction sites that, when built upon, will construct a UNSC or Banished Stronghold. The UNSC Stronghold comes is a UNSC Minibase with a Barracks, Garage and Airpad automatically attached while the Banished Stronghold is a Banished Minibase that comes with a Raid Camp, Foundry and Apex attached. This allows the controlling player to quickly begin manufacturing units.
