Before becoming a full-time writer, Stephen worked as a Program Manager in the Microsoft Office Server group. He also received three patent awards for his work on web-based content management. While working for Microsoft, he had a chance to work as a Beta tester for ''[[Halo 2]]''.

He left Microsoft in 2004 to marry his Canadian wife. After his leave, he went on looking around for some Halo strategy info to improve his game experience, he was shocked that there wasn't any great books or guides.
