The Halo universe is a vast setting, taking place almost entirely within the Milky Way galaxy. In the modern era, the domains of both humanity and the Covenant empire reside mostly within the Orion Arm, though the Forerunners' domain encompassed the entire galaxy, with some expeditions to the dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way.

The Human Sphere is centred on humanity's homeworld Earth, and encompassed over 800 colony worlds at its peak in 2525. Throughout the Human-Covenant War, this number steadily depleted as colonies were attacked and glassed by the Covenant, leaving humanity in a precarious position with only a small number of remaining worlds to face the post-war era.

The Covenant Sphere encompassed much of the Orion Arm of the galaxy, with its core revolving around dozens of colonies settled by the Sangheili in the pre-Covenant era, with Sanghelios at their centre. Since then, the Covenant have gone on to conquer numerous other species and incorporate them into the empire, growing in size until its eventual dissolution in 2552 at the end of the war with humanity. Now, the empire's carcass is divided among hundreds of warlords seeking to revive it, or use it to build new orders.
