The modular Spartan cores are installed with the binaries for a wide range of offensive and defensive peripheral systems and components, such as surveillance upgrades, stealth systems, and enhanced thruster modules. Each core can be readily integrated with the MJOLNIR platform, and even applied directly while in the field. The modular cores allow Spartans to take on a wide range of mission objectives; as such, they likely contribute to the GEN3 platform's overall versatility and cost-effectiveness.{{Ref/Book|Id=enc22p85|Enc22|Page=85}}

Cores are typically carried in encoded crates on the battlefield.{{Ref/Game|Id=tacmap|HI|TACMAP}} During the [[Battle for Zeta Halo]], [[John-117]] recovered a number of cores, including those from the armors of [[Bonita Stone]],{{Ref/Quest|Id=Foundation|HI|Ringfall|[[Foundation (Halo Infinite)|Foundation]]}} [[Hudson Griffin]],{{Ref/Quest|Id=Tower|HI|Connections|The Tower}} [[Vedrana Makovich]], and [[Theodore Sorel]];{{Ref/Quest|Id=Conservatory|HI|Connections|Conservatory}} he was able to spontaneously install each core, along with their upgrades, on his own armor with ease.
