While the [[2552|final year]] of the Covenant War was marked by clashes for newfound Forerunner artifacts and the revelation of humanity's birthright as [[Reclaimer|chosen inheritors]] to the Forerunner civilization, yet more significant discoveries would follow in the wake of the conflict. Long-hidden details about the Forerunners and their relationship between humanity began to surface, as did information regarding the yet more ancient and enigmatic race known as the [[Precursor]]s. These unprecedented findings would have an immediate influence on events in the modern times, acting as driving forces for not only renascent Covenant cults but also forces far more ancient.

Before the Forerunners first built the [[Halo Array]], the human race held a [[Prehistoric human civilization|great interstellar empire]]. During the course of their growth as a civilization, they [[Human-Forerunner war|encountered]] a terrifying threat: an extragalactic parasite known as the [[Flood]]. As the parasite ravaged their worlds and threatened to consume their entire species, humanity fled outwards from their home territory. The Covenant had strategically settled Jiralhanae populations on resource-rich worlds as a planetary garrison force to protect the worlds from potential raids. While the Jiralhanae continued to inhabit these worlds after the dissolution of the Covenant, they were unable to mine or utilize the resources because of their own lack of sufficient technology. With the Covenant's supply chains gone, the Jiralhanae quickly found their supplies near depletion. This was one of the primary reasons for their raids on Sangheili colonies after the Human-Covenant war; despite quite literally living on top of plentiful resources, the Jiralhanae were entirely dependent on the already processed supplies of other races due to their technological backwardness. However, the Jiralhanae could not sustain themselves via raiding alone in the long term and their supplies began to wear thin, leading to an impending species-wide famine in [[2558]] and an increase in Jiralhanae attacks across Sangheili and [[Kig-Yar]] colonies as a result. As a result, 'Telcam and his followers grew angry with [[Arbiter]] [[Thel 'Vadam]]'s government. After winning the favor of several [[keep]]s and mustering a small space fleet, the Servants led an uprising in the state of [[Vadam]]. They initially held the upper hand, but the tide turned when UNSC ''Infinity'' arrived and intervened on behalf of the Arbiter, shooting down a rebel destroyer and firing a [[Magnetic Accelerator Cannon|MAC]] round into massing rebel ground forces besieging 'Vadam's keep. Meanwhile, the Spartans in the Forerunner structure managed to use the local [[teleportation grid]] to travel to the surface, splitting into two groups with different destinations. After years of diplomatic work, peace talks were finally scheduled between humanity's Unified Earth Government and the Sangheili. The convocation was held in a regional embassy in a densely populated city on Biko in the human Outer Colonies. Richard Sekibo, the revered ambassador of the Outer Colonies, led the conference.

Sekibo had uncovered evidence of a terrorist plot by [[Sapien Sunrise]] one week before the attack. He petitioned the UNSC for help, but they rejected his request immediately.

As the conference was coming to an end, an agreement of peace was close to being reached. Suddenly, rogue Spartan-II John-117 entered the embassy and instantly killed Richard Sekibo's bodyguard, who in reality were Sapien Sunrise infiltrators. A firefight began, in which John abducted Sekibo and created an escape path through the infiltrators by killing them. John fled the embassy alongside the Sangheili delegation, which he escorted to safety.

Outside the embassy, an evacuation ship for John was waiting. He boarded the ship, alongside the alien diplomats, and fled the planet. At some point, Sekibo was killed and his corpse was left behind in a field near the embassy on Biko. A long-dead communications hub on this planet's surface activated, attracting the attention of Jul 'Mdama's Covenant faction. The Covenant established an outpost while Dr. Halsey, under temporary alliance with Covenant leader Jul 'Mdama, studied the relay and discovered that her old AI Cortana was alive and responsible for recent attacks on the human colonies by awakening Guardians. She contacted the UNSC about her discovery, but they did not take any action for three weeks. In the meantime Halsey made unsuccessful attempts to contact or deter Cortana's transmissions, but her lack of headway led to Jul 'Mdama growing impatient with her.

The UNSC Infinity deployed Fireteam Osiris, a Spartan-IV special operations squad, to retrieve Halsey and assassinate Jul 'Mdama. They dropped from low orbit by Pelican and landed amidst an enormous ship and ground battle, as Cortana had taken control of Jul's Prometheans and was unleashing them against him. The Covenant made little headway against the numerous droids, with the constructs managing to bring down a blockade runner and force back a Kraken walker. The chaos from the Prometheans' rebellion provided Osiris cover from the Covenant, allowing them to sneak to the temple where 'Mdama and Halsey were stationed. After reaching the temple, Osiris killed Jul's Zealot guards and then turned to Jul himself, who was killed attempting to fight off Spartan Jameson Locke. They then took custody of Dr. Halsey and she was brought back to the Infinity to aid the search for the Guardians. With Jul 'Mdama dead and the Prometheans now against them, his Covenant troops became desperate. Some of them fled to the Argent Moon to retrieve their soldiers scavenging the station, though most of them were killed during the raid on Argent Moon. Most of the rest regrouped on Sanghelios, attempting an attack on the Vadam clan burial grounds in hopes of a revenge attack against the Arbiter.

To this end, Locke travelled with [[Swords of Sanghelios]] forces to [[Sanghelios]] in order to met with Arbiter Thel 'Vadam. Right during their arrival, Locke and [[Fireteam Osiris]] [[Battle of Nuusra|aided]] the Swords into defeating forces of Jul 'Mdama's Covenant at the [[Elder Council Chamber]]. Locke arrived right in time to save Thel, who killed two Sangheili attackers. Assembling on a Swords of Sanghelios outpost in [[Nuusra]], Locke asked for 'Vadam's assistance in tracking down the rogue Spartans. Seeking the Master Chief, the Swords of Sanghelios and [[Fireteam Osiris]] took part in a joint operation to capture Jul 'Mdama's resurrected Covenant's last bastion on Sanghelios: [[Sunaion]]. As the Swords of Sanghelios began their voracious assault on Sunaion, Locke's team inserted via [[Lich]] into the city. During the battle, a [[Guardian]] emerged from the nearby sea and was boarded by Fireteam Osiris in an attempt to reach Blue Team's location.

After arriving on the Forerunner Builder planet known as Genesis aboard the Guardian from Meridian, Blue Team fought their way through Covenant forces who had crashed landed there. Following closely behind them was Fireteam Osiris, who had arrived at Genesis on a Guardian from Sanghelios. With them was [[031 Exuberant Witness]], the monitor of the Genesis installation. Although Osiris managed to reach Blue Team's location, Cortana separated them and upon failing to convince the Master Chief to join her on her plans, locked Blue Team into a [[Cryptum]]. Cortana prepared to leave aboard a Guardian and take the Cryptum with her, but Exuberant Witness and Fireteam Osiris managed to save Blue Team and free them from the Cryptum. Blue Team was reunited with Osiris and both teams returned to Sanghelios.

Meanwhile, Cortana arrived at Earth with her Guardian and released an EMP blast, powering down the entire planet. ''Infinity'' managed to narrowly escape the attack and resolved to keep running until they could find a way to fight Cortana.
