In the Halo trilogy of games, a map is an interactive battlefield arena.

It is sometimes referred to as a level.

A map contains landscape, weapons, adversaries and game physics (for example, gravity and explosions).

Some maps are multiplayer allowing you to interact with others on the same Xbox via split-screen, or with other local consoles via System Link, or online with Xbox Live.

From time to time, new map packs are made available by Bungie.

Examples of maps (levels) are The Armory (Level) and Zanzibar (Level).

After Halo 2 was released the multiplayer maps production had been going full speed. Now there are many maps of all size categories.

Some are suitable for raw FFA carnage. Some are excellent for Team Slayer with Battle Rifle start.

In any particular map, different games (gametypes) can be played. For example, Juggernaut and Capture the Flag. Each game has a subset of game variants, for instance Ninjanaut and Multi Flag CTF. Different rules (rulesets) can also be in effect for a certain map and gametype.

There are symmetric maps with two distinct bases. Also there are symmetric maps with three or more bases where multiple teams can play well balanced CTF or Assault.

Juggernaut is best played on certain maps, different maps depending on the size of the party.

There are maps where Vehicles form the most strategic resources and maps where carnage always starts with a rush for the same weapon. In short, there's something for everyone.

The maps are all very well designed with an extreme attention to detail. Some maps, like Lockout for instance, seem to transform with your experience, offering true fun regardless if you're a beginner or expert.
