Master Chief Petty Officer

Master Chief Petty Officer, abbreviated to MCPO, also nicknamed as "Top Chief" out of respect for John-117, is the highest enlisted rank in the United Nations Space Command Naval Command (NAVCOM) rank structure; including the UNSC Navy and Office of Naval Intelligence. It is preceded by Senior Chief Petty Officer.[1]

Responsibilities[edit]
Master Chief Petty Officers are often Fleet administration or HIGHCOM staff.[1] They can also lead companies with Captains and Lieutenants that outrank them.[2]
Insignia[edit]
The metal insignia has three chevrons capped by a rocker. The UNSC eagle is placed on top of the rocker, with the eagle's wingtips having stars at the end of them.[2] When John-117 was promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer, the insignia also had a down-turned dagger that sat between the chevrons and the rocker which Colonel Marmon Crowther stated was a space assault rating as Crowther had only been able to find one from his Black Daggers.[2]
Ceremony[edit]
Master Chief Petty Officers are often given a ceremony on the largest ship in a fleet.[2] In the case of John-117, Colonel Marmon Crowther gave him the promotion privately with just Sergeant Avery Johnson in attendance. In this case, Crowther stated that while John deserved to have the full ceremony, the current circumstances prevented it. Crowther, who was an ODST Colonel, gave John the promotion both in recognition of his actions and to solidify John's authority over the Black Daggers who all were older than him and many of whom outranked John.[2]
