When the ''Pillar of Autumn'' arrived at [[Installation 04]] in [[2552]], Fitzgerald was able to successfully evacuate from the ship, and was eventually able to come into contact with [[D77-TC Pelican]] ''[[Echo 419]]''. When ''Echo 419'' responded to a distress signal from [[Fire Team Charlie]], Fitzgerald accompanied [[John-117]] in a [[M12 Chaingun Warthog|Warthog]] to search for the other Bumblebee lifeboats. Fitzgerald introduced himself to the Chief enthusiastically.{{Ref/Novel|Id=TF3|HTF|Chapter=3}}

While in their search for surviving Marines and [[UNSC Navy|Navy personnel]], he was wounded in the arm by a shot from a [[Type-33 Guided Munitions Launcher|T-33 Needler]]. After that, John-117 ordered him to man his position and keep firing until he returned. He took cover behind the Warthog and waited until the Chief was able to treat his wound with [[Biofoam]]. He continued to man the [[M41 Light Anti-Aircraft Gun|M41 LAAG]] and survived the fight to return to [[Alpha Base (Installation 04)|Alpha Base]] with the Chief.{{Ref/Reuse|TF3}} Fitzgerald's fate following this unknown, though he was presumably killed by the time of Installation 04's destruction on September 22, 2552 along with all other UNSC forces on the ring.
