In November [[2559]], during the rogue AI [[Cortana]]'s [[Created uprising|reign]] over the [[Milky Way|galaxy]], Marcus was a part of an ODST force called [[Tango Team]] under the command of [[SPARTAN-IV program|Spartan]] [[Olympia Vale]] and [[Gunnery Sergeant]] [[Grim Bear]] that was deployed to the world of [[Netherop]] aboard the {{Class|Point Blank|prowler}} {{UNSCShip|Hidden Point}}. Their aim was to recover the [[Divine Hand]], a weapon that could be used to destroy Cortana's [[Guardians]]. Marcus was deployed towards the surface of the planet in a [[D102 Owl]] insertion craft alongside Vale, Grim Bear, [[Keely Iyuska]], [[Rosa Fuertes]], [[P. Barnes]], [[S. Legowski]] and the other 12 ODSTs of Tango Team, with Marcus in command of the [[Tango Team|Second Squad]]. During their descent, the Divine Hand was fired by [[Nizat 'Kvarosee]] and the [[Defenders of the Sanctum]], destroying the 40 [[Pelican]] dropships accompanying the Owl and leaving Tango Team the only ones to reach the planet's surface.{{Ref/Novel|Id=OutC8|Out|Chapter=8}} Upon landing at the summit of the tel were the weapon had fired, Grim Bear had her troops establish a perimeter and scout ahead for a way to infiltrate the tel. Tango Team was then ambushed by the Defenders of the Sanctum as the [[Covenant]] castaways opened up a tunnel directly below their landing zone. The humans were able to repel them despite Legowski and Fuertes going missing.{{Ref/Novel|Id=OutC10|Out|Chapter=10}}

After the ambush, Tango Team was joined by the remaining forces of [[Arbiter]] [[Thel 'Vadam]] and [[Commander]] [[Amalea Petrov]]. After the Arbiter's forces pursued the Defenders of the Sanctum through the tunnels, Marcus remained on the surface alongside Grim Bear and Second Squad while Vale, Iyuska, Petrov and [[Tango Team|First Squad]] descended into the tel through a ventilation duct.{{Ref/Novel|Id=OutC13|Out|Chapter=13}} They remained on the tell for some time, witnessing the second firing of the Divine Hand. Noticing a sudden [[Banished]] orbital drop, Second Squad began to set up a defensive trench line to respond to the oncoming attack. Fuertes and Legowski rejoined them at this point, as Fuertes tapped into the power of the tel and was able to tunnel their way out. Marcus and [[Duval]] briefly secured this tunnel as they broke the surface, preparing to engage any hostiles that emerged from it.{{Ref/Novel|Id=OutC22|Out|Chapter=22}} The forces inside the tel then returned to the surface, and Marcus witnessed the delegation between [[Arbiter]] [[Thel 'Vadam]] and [[Warmaster]] [[Atriox]], where the [[vacuum energy condenser]] which powered the Divine Hand was ceded to the Banished.{{Ref/Novel|Id=OutC24|Out|Chapter=24}} After the confrontation, Marcus was evacuated from Netherop alongside the rest of the surviving human and Sangheili forces via their Owl dropship to a group of waiting [[D81-LRT Condor]] long-range dropships, which took them into [[Slipstream space|slipspace]].{{Ref/Novel|Id=OutC26|Out|Chapter=26}}
