| The Rookie drops onto New Jerusalem. He finds lone ODST, Gage Yevgenny dying near a Pelican crash site. Refusing to be rescued, Gage begins to tell the young Rookie about how he got here and to not make the same mistakes he did. The scene changes to a young Gage on Harvest. His father scolds him as he is unwilling to work on a farm. Angered by his father, Gage goes to the UNSC recruitment office, excited to fight Insurrectionists. While in training, Gage meets Mason Li, Eric Santiago, and Felicia Sanderson. During a training exercise, Gage is able to outsmart an ODST sniper and Mason captures the mission target, earning the respect of their training leader. Due to their competence in the training exercises, Mason, Eric, and Gage are transferred to the 7th ODST battlegroup. After the mission, the trainees are celebrating their victory in at bar. Felicia asks if Gage is going to say good-bye to his father before he is shipped out, but Gage confirms that he is not and that he is glad to leave Harvest; since it is "just dirt". Angered by Gage's attitude, Felicia leaves.

| Some time later, during a training exercise, Colonel Teller informs Gage and his fellow Marines about an intelligent alien civilization, the Covenant. Teller confirms that the aliens are attacking Harvest, and the UNSC is on the verge of losing it. The ODSTs are needed to aid in civilian evacuation. Because one of Gage's squad members is on leave, he is replaced with Sergeant Pillar, much to the squad's chagrin. The ODSTs prepare for combat drop over Harvest, and the episode ends with the HEVs landing on the planet's surface.

| ===Episode Two===
| |
| The episode begins with flashbacks from the previous episode, then the scene returns back to Harvest, with the ODSTs making landfall. By the time they arrive, Harvest is already overtaken by Covenant. They struggle to find their way through the mess. Gage and Mason succeed in quickly eliminating several Unggoy Minors, however, they realize that most of the battlegroup is separated. Gage returns to his home, only to find it destroyed and burning. Saddened that he could not make amends with his father, Gage and Mason leave. The two encounter a civilian burying a deceased loved one, and Gage gets into an argument with him. The argument is interrupted when the Covenant begins to glass the planet.

| Meanwhile Pillar and Jackson encounter a teacher and several students taking cover in a school. She attempts to warn them that it is a trap, but it is too late and Jackson is killed by a Anskum. While Eric and Joan attempt to make their way to the first evac point, Joan is wounded by Unggoy soldiers. With Joan injured, Eric orders all nearby units to fall back to the first evac point. The two are then assisted by Pillar. As Gage and Mason escort the civilian to an evac point, they encounter Kig-Yar Snipers and some Unggoy. Eventually, all the remaining ODSTs and civilians make it to the evac point, which is under attack by Banshees. Gage spots Felicia, now a Marine, but he is wounded by a Banshee and extracted by Pillar and Mason. Gage awakes in the medical bay of the Spirit of Fire, where he is informed that Felicia's location is unknown. The scene returns back to New Jerusalem, where Gage tells the Rookie that he realized too late that Harvest was "more than just dirt". The episode ends with the Rookie spotting an approaching CAS.

| ==Changes from Dirt==
| |
| *The Rookie saved Gage Yevgenny from an Unggoy, though in the original story, no enemy has gotten near to the Pelican crash site before the Rookie's arrival.
| |
| *Gage Yevgenny joined the ODSTs immediately after he left home, as opposed to be a Colonial Military Administration soldier before inspired to join the UNSC.
| |
| *Due to the change above, Allison Stark was never introduced, and Yevgenny only met Felicia Sanderson and Eric Santiago during training, and not after going to CMA boot camp. Santiago was never sent to a coma by insurrectionists.
| |
| *Unlike the original story, Yevgenny, Sanderson, and Santiago were sent to fight on Harvest.
| |
| *Yevgenny lost track of Sanderson because he was knocked out during the battle, though in the original plot, Sanderson was transferred away from his squad.
| |
| *The Spirit of Fire made an appearance as the ship Yevgenny was brought aboard after being knocked out.
