A coilgun, also known as a Gauss gun, is a type of mass driver weapon employed by the United Nations Space Command for both ground and space applications. Coilguns utilize electromagnetic coils to propel a hyperdense projectile to high speeds.[1] Coilguns are similar in design and function to railgun weaponry as both make use of electromagnets in their operation.

Design details[edit]

Coilguns utilize a series of electromagnetically charged coils powered in a timed sequence to propel a magnetic projectile at speeds faster than that of chemical weaponry. UNSC coilguns almost exclusively utilize Asynchronous Linear-Induction Motor (ALIM) technology which is capable of accelerating a projectile to such speeds that its impact seems instantaneous from the point of firing.[2]

Known coilguns[edit]

Mass drivers[edit]

Main article: Mass Driver

Mass drivers are a form of typically stationary coilgun used to fire payloads at high velocities.

Magnetic Accelerator Cannons[edit]

Main article: Magnetic Accelerator Cannon

Magnetic Accelerator Cannons are naval coilguns employed for ship-to-ship combat by the UNSC Navy.

Gauss cannons[edit]

Gauss cannons are mounted Asynchronous Linear Induction Motors (ALIMs) used by both the UNSC and CMA, generally as an armament on vehicles or static turrets used for anti-armour roles. Despite their name, they do not operate as a Gauss gun, but are instead named after the 19th century mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss - whose work led to the development of ALIM technology.[3]

When fired, a Gauss cannon's ALIM can accelerate a ferric-tungsten projectile up to velocities approaching Mach 1, appearing to the naked eye as an instantaneous flash of light.[4]

Gauss cannons are sequentially designated in a manner similar to the light railgun cannons in UNSC service. All are built by Misriah Armory.[4]
