Battle of Mombasa
Battle of Mombasa
During the first day of the Battle for Earth, Walepole and his squad were dispatched from the In Amber Clad from Cairo Station to relieve the UNSC's ground forces and to board the Covenant assault carrier, Solemn Penance. Shortly after deployment, their D77-TC Pelican dropship was shot down over Old Mombasa by a Type-47A Scarab walker. He survived the crash, but his squad was soon attacked by a Covenant patrol.
During the Battle of Mombasa, Fones belonged to "Second Squad", serving aboard the In Amber Clad. He was deployed to the Battle of Mombasa on October 2552, under the command of Gunnery Sergeant Marcus Stacker.

Fones and his squad were aboard a D77-TC Pelican dropship when it was shot down by a Protos walker on approach to an area in New Mombasa, Kenya. After their Pelican made a rough landing outside of an abandoned beachside hotel in Old Mombasa, Fones reported that O'Brien was killed on impact. He, along with his squad quickly moved out to get better cover, and headed toward Hotel Zanzibar. During a skirmish with camouflaged Sangheili, a Anskum had landed on Fones's helmet. Using quick reflexes, the ODST was able to remove his headgear and hurl it toward the camouflaged Sangheili's position on higher ground. There, Sergeant Stacker and his team saw the charging soldier, only after it had held Walpole as a prisoner. Butkus opened fire with an overcharged plasma pistol at the Sangheili, as Stacker shot the Sangheili in the head with his BR55 battle rifle.
When the squad was pinned down by a Kig-Yar Sniper, Walpole as the squad's sniper, neutralized the Jackal with his "welcome-to-Earth gift basket", causing the lance's Unggoy to flee the area. A camouflaged Sangheili then sneaked up on the squad and took Walpole hostage by holding an energy sword held at the sniper's throat. One of Walpole' squadmates, Butkus, wielding an overcharged plasma pistol, along with Stacker using his BR55 battle rifle, killed the alien and freed Walpole. Walpole's subsequent fate is unknown, as his Sergeant, Stacker, was later found in the city without his squad present.

Production notes
Personality and traits
*Fones, though unnamed throughout the cinematic, is named after Jeremy Fones, one of the animators in Bungie and worked on Another Day at the Beach.
Like all ODSTs, Jones is very tough and professional. He is an excellent marksman, and is not afraid of enemy snipers. He also has a notable sense of humor, even in combat, as evidenced by his desire to provide the Kig-Yar a "Welcome to Earth" 'gift basket'. When he is being held hostage by a Sangheili, he orders the team to kill the Sangheili instead of saving him.
*In the original Halo 2 cinematic by Bungie, Fones and Stacker shared the same facial model, but Stacker was distinguished by the blood on his left cheek. In the remastered cinematic by Blur Studio, Fones' appearance was given a unique facial model which featured a blonde mohawk.

*In the original Halo 2 cinematic by Bungie, it was Fones who said, "Cook the bastard" to Butkus, and shot the Sangheili with his battle rifle. In the remastered cinematic by Blur Studio, the role was given to Stacker.
Trivia
*Walpole is named after Nathan Walpole, a Bungie employee who worked on the animations in Halo 2.
