Eric Nylund was born in 1964, and spent his youth in California. He has a bachelor's degree in Chemistry and a master's degree in Chemical Physics. In the 1990s, he was hired by Microsoft as a writer for the company's multimedia properties. He later moved on to serve as lead of Microsoft's Narrative Design team, tasked with world-building, developing character and story bibles, preparing materials for marketing, writing game manuals and scripts, consulting voice casting and directing voice actors, and coordinating with MS localization, legal, and geopolitical departments.{{Ref/Reuse|linkedin}} He has written novels, backstory and scripts for several games, including ''Halo'', ''[[Wikipedia:Crimson Skies|Crimson Skies]]'' and ''[[Wikipedia:Gears of War|Gears of War]]''.
