==Overview==
The '''DX-class Dropship''', otherwise known as the '''Spirit''', is a [[Covenant]] infantry and logistical transport craft.<ref>''[[Halo: Ghosts of Onyx]]''</ref> They ceased to be in widespread use after the [[Battle of Onyx]], having been replaced by the new and improved [[Phantom]] class dropships.
===Design details===
The Spirit is a moderately large craft, being {{Convert|33|m|ft|sigfig=3|sp=us}} in length.{{Ref/Reuse|EVG}} The [[dropship]] is an angular, tuning fork-shaped spacecraft with two parallel personnel bays along the exterior of each "prong". The [[pilot]]'s compartment is located at the rear, between the twin troop bays. Each of these personnel bays has two doors that open and close vertically; however, they do not close fully and leave a small opening along the length of the bay. Between these extended personnel bays, a [[gravity hoist]]{{Ref/Reuse|Warfleet}} fluctuates visibly as it generates the ship's anti-gravity propulsion, similar in appearance to the energy pulse of the [[gravity lift]]s the Covenant use to commute between the ground and hovering ships. This same system is used to ferry payloads to their destinations.{{Ref/Reuse|universe}} A uniquely stable contragravity system is fitted onto the dropship, which can adapt to a wide range of load profiles without any apparent compensation delays or loss of efficacy.{{Ref/Reuse|Warfleet}} The hull of the Spirit is unexpectedly robust and the pilots are well protected in the dropship's aft cockpit. A Spirit is more likely to survive combat zones that would be considered suicidal for the somewhat more fragile [[Phantom]].{{Ref/Reuse|universe}}

Like all Covenant dropships, the Spirit utilizes field shaping vanes to modify its aerodynamic profile, but this has little defensive application. Energy shields could be fitted, but there were few reasons to do so before the Human-Covenant War.{{Ref/Reuse|Warfleet}}
==Background==
[[Image:CovDropship11.jpg|left|200px|thumb|A Spirit fires upon enemy infantry.]]

The Spirit's awkward split-fuselage design and claustrophobic troop bays have proven to be a significant disadvantage for the dropship. The features may make troop and vehicle deployment a difficult and frustrating affair for the pilot, as well as a distressing experience for the Spirit's passengers. These disadvantages proved even more troublesome for its occupants after the [[United Nations Space Command]] learned to exploit the Spirit's predictable deployment methodology.{{Ref/Reuse|universe}}
Spirits are angular, tuning fork/'''U''' shaped spacecraft with two parallel personnel bays along the exterior of each "prong". They are known to be used to transport [[Sangheili|Elites]], [[Kig-yar|Jackals]], and [[Unggoy|Grunts]], (they are undoubtedly able to carry [[Brutes]] and [[Mgalekgolo|Hunters]]. Infact Hunters have been reported being seen coming out of the bays. Spirits have been known to ferry Covenant vehicles within the blue colored energy field between their prongs, usually [[Ghosts]] and [[Type-25 Assault Gun Carriage|Wraith]]s, or other small objects such as supply canisters. Around the time of the [[First Battle of Earth]], it would seem that the Spirits were completely replaced with the more heavily built [[Type-52 Troop Carrier|Phantom]]s, though, since great numbers were probably produced, were still used in the [[Battle of Onyx]]. A modified Spirit was used by [[Spartan 117]] to get him and his team aboard the ''[[Unyielding Hierophant]]'' in [[Operation: First Strike]]. During the [[Battle of Harvest]], a destroyed Spirit was used by the [[Huragok]], [[Lighter Than Some]], as raw material to create a vehicle that would later be adopted by the [[Brutes]] as the "[[Type-25 Rapid Assault Vehicle|Brute Chopper]]".

===Crew and complement===
It is speculated that the Spirit is not designed for combat drops, but is instead a Cargo transport, though it is armed with a light plasma cannon. The lack of effective offensive or defensive weaponry coupled with the small troop carrying capacity of the Spirit tends to support this, but seeing that the fleet that made the assault on halo was the fleet of ''particular justice'' (that happened to arrive ''before'' the [[Pillar of Autumn]])  you would think they would have more battle ready craft like a [[Phantom]] or at least outfit the ones they did have more. During the events of the [[Battle of Installation 04]] . The Spirits were the dropships the UNSC encountered on the first Halo and hated them for their ability to drop Covenant troops in places to assault the UNSC forces and to give them cover.
The Spirit is crewed by two [[Obedientaries]], a [[pilot]] and a sensor operator, who both occupy the armored command pod at the rear of the ship. Because its sensors and flight control system are intuitive and well-integrated, the pilot has excellent situational awareness of aerospace threats and environmental hazards. Because Sangheili disliked piloting dropships, Spirits were more often controlled by Unggoy and Kig-Yar crewmen.{{Ref/Reuse|Warfleet}}

As dedicated transports for infantry and vehicles, the Spirit is capable of carrying up to thirty passengers—with fifteen being held in each troop bay. Apart from stasis harnesses that buffer the stress of evasive maneuvers and turbulence, there are no safety systems installed in the bays to protect passengers stationed within.{{Ref/Reuse|Warfleet}} Up to two light-armored vehicles such as two {{Pattern|Karo'etba|Ghost}}s, one heavy-armored vehicle such as a {{Pattern|Zurdo|Wraith}}, or other possible payloads such as supply canisters for ground troops can also be carried. As aforementioned, these payloads are ferried underneath the dropship via its gravity hoist.
==Operation==
[[Image:SpiritonBattlefield.png|thumb|left|200px|A Spirit dropship hovers over a battlefield]]
The Spirit is a moderately large craft, similar in size to the [[D77-TC Pelican Dropship|Pelican]] dropship of the [[UNSC]]. Capable of powered flight and hovering, this dropship appears quite cumbersome and awkward to pilots based on battlefield observations but has been known to reach speeds of 350 kilometers per hour while cruising and has a suspected maximum speed of 1100 kph.

===Propulsion===
The craft is a dedicated transport of infantry and vehicles. As such it possesses only one defensive weapon, a heavy [[Class-2 Energy|plasma cannon]] nearly identical to that of the [[Shade]] plasma turret. The weapon is located beneath the main fuselage of the vessel. It fires slowly but with fairly high accuracy. Yet the gun's invincibility makes up for it's bad defense of the ship. However, each bolt from the cannon takes a long time to reach its target, allowing for easy evasion especially if in a vehicle.
Capable of powered flight and hovering, the dropship appears quite cumbersome and awkward to pilot based on battlefield observations. Despite this, the Spirit has been known to reach speeds of {{Convert|350|km/h|mph}} while cruising and has a maximum speed of {{Convert|1099|km/h|mph}}.{{Ref/Reuse|universe}}{{Ref/Reuse|ENC}}

While these dropships have life support for use in the vacuum of space, they do not have a [[Slipstream space|slipspace drive]]. During [[Operation: FIRST STRIKE]], a Spirit was modified with reinforced metal so it could be launched out of a ship already in slipspace. Even with this modification, the Spirit became severely damaged after the exit and was still unable to travel into the slipstream on its own accord.<ref>'''Halo: First Strike''', ''pages 295-296''</ref>
The Spirit possesses two troop bays each capable of holding four [[Grunts]], [[Jackals]] or [[Elites]]. Within each of these bays there appears to be a door hinting at the possibility that more soldiers could be unleashed from deeper within the vessel. Each of these troop bays has two doors that open and close vertically. However they do not close fully and leave a small opening along the length of the bay. Keen eyed snipers can take advantage of this and terminate soldiers before they even touch the ground.

===Armament===
Between these extended personnel bays, an energy field fluctuates visibly as it generates the ship's anti-gravity propulsion (similar in appearance to the energy pulse of the "[[Gravity Lift]]" elevators the Covenant use to commute between the ground and the hovering ships). This same gravity-beam is used to ferry [[Shade]]s, [[Ghost (Vehicle)|Ghosts]] and other ground vehicles to their destinations.
Spirits are armed with a singular rotating, low-mounted [[heavy plasma cannon]], located directly below the cockpit of the dropship.{{Ref/Reuse|ENC}} Though the weapon serves a defensive role,{{Ref/Reuse|universe}} the cannon is capable of delivering substantial damage to ground troops and vehicles.{{Ref/Reuse|universe}} An ancient design, its fire-control system is programmed with command codes that are barely understood by modern users.{{Ref/Reuse|Warfleet}} Unlike the humans' conventional bullet projectiles, the superheated [[plasma]] fired from the cannon travels slower, and are ineffective against fast-moving objects. Thus, it is only used as fire support during deployment of troops.{{Ref/Reuse|universe}} A simpler, manually-controlled version of this weapon is used in some Shade turret patterns.{{Ref/Reuse|Warfleet}}

==Identified Spirits==
While these dropships have life support for use in vacuum, they do not have a [[Slipspace|slipspace drive]]. In ''[[Halo: First Strike]]'', a Spirit was modified so it could be launched out of a ship already in [[Slipspace]]. Even with this modification, the Spirit became severely damaged after the exit and was still unable to travel into Slipspace on its own accord.

==Operational history==
==Appearances==
Spirits were the primary dropship and utility transport for the Covenant centuries before it was encountered on [[Harvest]] in [[2525]].{{Ref/Reuse|Warfleet}} The crew of the ''[[Rapid Conversion]]'' used Spirits during the [[First Battle of Harvest]].<ref name="CH">'''[[Halo: Contact Harvest]]'''</ref> Spirits were also used by the Covenant during the [[Battle of Kholo]].<ref name="TR">'''[[The Return]]'''</ref> During the [[Fall of Reach]] Spirits were deployed by the Covenant against the UNSC.<ref name="HR">'''[[Halo: Reach]]'''</ref> Spirits attached to the [[Fleet of Particular Justice]] were used against the crew of the {{UNSCShip|Pillar of Autumn}} and the Flood during the [[Battle of Installation 04]].<ref name="HCE">'''[[Halo: Combat Evolved]]'''</ref>
In the games, Spirits appear in ''[[Halo: Combat Evolved]]'' and in ''[[Halo Wars]]'', as the primary dropship of the Covenant. They do not make any appearance in ''[[Halo 2]]'' or ''[[Halo 3]]'', having been replaced by the sleeker, larger, heavier and faster [[Phantom]]. In the books, they are mentioned in ''[[Halo: Ghosts of Onyx]]'', ''[[Halo: Contact Harvest]]'', ''[[Halo: First Strike]]'', and the ''[[Halo Graphic Novel]]''.

While many ex-Covenant factions started phasing out the Type-25 Spirit in favor of the Type-57 Spirit, the [[Banished]] continued to use modified Type-25 Spirits. These [[Eklon'Dal Workshop Spirit|Banished Spirit]]s had their contragravity system reengineered so the chassis could handle the strain of transporting prefabricated buildings for [[Banished outpost]]s.<ref name="PL">'''Halo Wars 2''': [[Phoenix Logs#Banished Units|Phoenix Logs - Spirit]]</ref> The Banished utilized many T-25 Spirits against the crew of the UNSC ''Spirit of Fire'' during the [[Second Ark Conflict]].<ref name="HW2">'''[[Halo Wars 2]]'''</ref>
It is not specifically known why the Spirit was removed from Halo 2 and 3, however it could be that the Phantom was in the process of replacing it as a newer model, or that the Phantom was preferred by Bungie.

[[Image:COVIEDropship.jpg|thumb|right|150px|A Covenant Spirit dropship.]]
As well as being able to drop off a large number of Covenant troops on the battlefield, the Spirit is also capable of providing heavy support in combat thanks to the turret that lies underneath its cockpit. When dropping off troops, the Spirit will be stationary in mid-air for a few seconds, before descending and opening its troop bay doors. In rarer cases, the Spirit may stay suspended in midair; the troops that disembark may actually die from the fall.<ref>'''Halo: Combat Evolved''', campaign level ''[[Keyes]]''</ref> Spirits can also deploy [[Karo'etba-pattern Ghost|Ghost]]s and [[Zurdo-pattern Wraith|Wraith]]s into the battlefield. Like [[Pelican]]s, Spirits follow a set path: they appear from around the background, arrive at the battlefield, deploy troops, take off and disappear around the corner.
The Spirit is indestructible, unless a mod for the [[Halo PC|PC]] version is used for one shot kills. Then it will simply look as if it had been burned, it loses its ball turret and all occupants die. No amount of firepower that the player can bring to bear is capable of bringing the ship down if no mods are added. The best tactic, if on lower difficulty levels, is to attack the vulnerable infantry (shoot or toss a grenade) as they disembark from the Spirit. On higher difficulties, this would be unwise, hiding behind cover until the ship leaves is often the best course of action in this situation. Without cover or good tactics a careless player will die very quickly. As well as providing heavy support in combat it can drop off a unit of [[Covenant]] in the battle field. The unit is dispersed by getting out of the side of the dropship.
Another easy tactic especially on later parts of the level [[Halo (Halo: Combat Evolved Level)|Halo]], is to simply drive your [[Warthog]] across the area where the enemies jump out. If done at the right time, you'll easily run over the entire disembarking Covenant.

===[[Halo Wars]]===
[[Image:Halo Wars Spirit Dropship.jpg|150px|thumb|right|Spirit Dropship as they appear in [[Halo Wars]].]]
The Spirit is used to deliver quite large amounts of troops on the battlefield, including units that normally wouldn't fit inside it, including [[Hunters]], of course for gameplay reasons. It is very fast and quite resistant to damage: it is advisable to take it out just before the troops it carries disembark, for it is slower than usual. The units which do this best are [[Wolverine]]s, [[Hornet]]s and [[Hawk]]s. Spirits in Halo Wars don't engage enemy targets and are only seen in the [[Campaign]].
{{clear}}
===[[Glitches]]===
*In Halo CE if you had a good shot it is possible to shoot or kill the passengers before the hatches open.

The Spirit, including its turret, is indestructible. In addition, its heavy, bulky armor can protect those resting within the troop bay doors.

===''Halo: Reach''===
The Spirit in ''Halo: Reach'' behaves similarly to its ''Halo: Combat Evolved'' incarnation. One significant change, however, is that of its firing operation, which now matches the behavior of the Phantom's plasma auto-cannon. Instead of simultaneously firing three bolts of plasma, it now sports a weapon similar to the {{Pattern|Elo'Nakada|concussion rifle}}, which is significantly more powerful but fires only one bolt at a time and at half the speed. It remains indestructible, but its turret can be shot off with enough firepower. In [[Firefight]] mode, destroying the turret grants the player who did so a two [[credit]] bonus and a kill with whatever weapon they are using (counting towards the specific commendation for that weapon and towards any weapon related sprees).

== Production notes ==
Accoring to [[Shi Kai Wang]], the Spirit born out of the necessity of a open space game that needed to introduce units from a dropship, instead of appearing out of nowhere behind blockades.{{Ref/Site|Id=twitter2|D=17|M=2|Y=2021|URL=https://twitter.com/shiekthegeek/status/1362153219858722816|Site=Twitter|Page=Shiek Wang 王峙凱 - (2/7)Seems obvious now, but the dropship is born out of necessity of a open space game that needed to introduce units that didn't seem 'gamey', as in magically appearing behind blockades. How do you get more enemies into an open space encounter?  Alien dropships of course!}} Originally, the Spirit was designed with the "tuning forks" as the vehicle's back, but a miscommunication with the animation and 3D teams made it the other way around, with the forks tuning forward; ultimately it was decided to keep the vehicle that way.{{Ref/Site|Id=twitter3|D=17|M=2|Y=2021|URL=https://twitter.com/shiekthegeek/status/1362153222559866883|Site=Twitter|Page=Shiek Wang 王峙凱 - (3/7)So I'll state this upfront; the Spirit was always concepted with the tuning forks as the back. A miscommunication on direction for animation and 3D made it so the tuning fork faced forward.  Ultimately we all agreed that felt more aggressive so we left it :)}} Unlike other Covenant vehicles, the Spirit was not based on an animal, but on what Doug Chiang did with the ''Star Wars'' vehicles: bringing clean organic shapes with hard edges.{{Ref/Site|Id=twitter4|D=17|M=2|Y=2021|URL=https://twitter.com/shiekthegeek/status/1362153224027836416|Site=Twitter|Page=Shiek Wang 王峙凱 - (4/7)There was no animal this was based off of unfortunately. Designing a ship that could transport troops and vehicles was challenging physically for Wang, and the use of the tractor beams between the forks was used both to simplify that challenge and as an answer to the Covenant's unexplanable technology.{{Ref/Site|Id=twitter5|D=17|M=2|Y=2021|URL=https://twitter.com/shiekthegeek/status/1362153224933756931|Site=Twitter|Page=Shiek Wang 王峙凱 - (5/7)Needing to design a ship that can hull vehicles and units proved challenging physically.  The use of 'tractor beams' between the forks was to simplify that variable.  That sci-fi element proved useful as a magic answer for a lot of covenant based unexplanable tech.}} The players's ability to pick off enemies when the Spirit's troop bays opened was an accident born from how the physics worked on ''Halo: Combat Evolved''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s engine.{{Ref/Site|Id=twitter6|D=17|M=2|Y=2021|URL=https://twitter.com/shiekthegeek/status/1362153227706277888|Site=Twitter|Page=Shiek Wang 王峙凱 - (6/7)It's a happy accident that when the doors open for the Spirit you can pick off enemies.  It wasn't planned that way, but the way our physics worked in our engine with units attached to vehicles allowed them to be separate, and thus hittable with projectiles once opened.}} At the end, the Spirit made its role, but Shi Kai Wang felt the vehicle was a little out of character in the Covenant's design language, being this the reason Wang redesigned the Spirit into the Phantom in ''Halo 2''. {{Ref/Site|Id=twitter7|D=17|M=2|Y=2021|URL=https://twitter.com/shiekthegeek/status/1362153229010620417|Site=Twitter|Page=Shiek Wang 王峙凱 - (7/7)At the end, it worked, but I've always felt it was a little out of character in design language, hence the redesign for the Phantom.  Which I'll get to next. *The ''[[Marathon]]'' logo can be seen on the front of the cockpit.
*In Halo PC by modding you can turn a Pelican into a Spirit. The hatches will usually remain open and nobody, not even Covenant, can ride in them.
*The Spirit dropship was erroneously designated as the "[[Taaku Xur-pattern Spirit|Type-28 Spirit]]" during the development of ''[[Halo: Reach]]''; this was soon corrected following the release of the game. This error, however, persists in the [[2011]] edition of the ''[[Halo Encyclopedia (2009 edition)]]''.{{Ref/Reuse|ENC}}
*It seems that in skirmish mode of Halo Wars, the Spirit has been replaced by the Gravity Lift, an object that sends all units to their leader unit's (Regret, Arbiter, Brute Chieftain) location.
*The Spirit is jokingly known as the "tuning fork" among [[Bungie]] employees due to its shape.<ref>'''Halo: Reach''', ''Legendary Developer Commentary''</ref> [[Lorraine McLees]] described the Spirit as "having the coolest rear-end of all the Covenant ships".<ref>'''[[The Art of Halo]]''', ''page 131''</ref>
*The ''Spirit'' did not get an official and sanctioned name until [[Halo: Ghosts of Onyx]] was released in October 2006. Up until that point, the ship was simply referred to as the "[[Covenant]] dropship." Other sources unofficially referred to it as the "Apparition", the "Spook", the "Harbinger", and even the "Bandit", based on the military term for an enemy used by a [[Marine]] to refer to a Spirit in ''[[Halo (Halo: Combat Evolved Level)|Halo]]''.<ref>[http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=753441 "...Phantoms, Spirits and even Banshees..." *According to the ''[[Halo Graphic Novel]]'', a Spirit Dropship called '''Brilliant Gift''' was taken over by the [[Flood]] and crashed into the ''[[Infinite Succor]]''. This ship would most likely be utilized by the [[Flood]] in their attempt to escape the Installation.

*The Spirit seems to be slower than the Pelican, as described in Halo: First Strike its maximum velocity was "under Mach 1" while the Pelican could reach "Mach 3", although it may be due to the fact the Pelican was almost in freefall.

*A possible reason for the abandonment of the Spirit Dropship was the unorthodox deploying of troops, that could lead them into enemy fire if dropped incorrectly. Also, it could be the fact that they aren't equipped for space travel but for low altitude transportation.
