Desolation is a Halo 2 multiplayer map. The map was one of two created for Halo 2 by Certain Affinity, and released alongside Tombstone as part of the Blastacular Pack. Desolation is a remake of the multiplayer map Derelict, from Halo: Combat Evolved.
Desolation is a Halo 2 multiplayer map. The map was designed from the ground up by video game company Certain Affinity.

Description
*Desolation is a remake of the map Derelict, from Halo: Combat Evolved.
The Coral Sea discovered this site - as well as many similar ones - hidden in Delta Halo’s dense jungles. Analysts believe this was once used by Forerunners to study the extensive collection of species retrieved by Lifeworkers during the Conservation Measure. After the activation of the Array and the dark time that followed, this facility was abandoned.

Desolation is a remake of the Halo: Combat Evolved map Derelict. However, while developing the map, Certain Affinity found that the sleek and intersecting lines of Forerunner architecture were perfect for the map's geometry. This inspired the decision to set the map on Delta Halo, as opposed to its distinctly human predecessor.
Background
Desolation has an entirely new setting. Rather than a facility of some kind in deep space, as Derelict was, Desolation is located on Delta Halo. The architecture appears to be of Forerunner origin and looks similar to the structures seen on Delta Halo in Campaign.

Overview
Gameplay
It features a similar weapon set to its precursor, but adjusted to account for Halo 2's different arsenal. For example, the assault rifle spawn is replaced by a battle rifle. There is also an energy sword to accompany the shotgun.

Trivia
Desolation also has certain structural differences between itself and Derelict. The Teleporters have been replaced by Gravity Lifts that propel players from the ground to upper level. However, the tunnels on the upper level have not been replaced by ramps that lead down the the ground level, as Bungie said in a Weekly Update.
Production notes
*Despite not being a fan-favourite from the original game, Derelict was chosen by Max Hoberman to bring to Halo 2 due to the team's goal of bringing in a map that would be fun for small groups of players, and something that would appeal to fans of Midship and competitive play. To start with, Hoberman drew out the map design in Adobe Illustrator, and made alterations to the layout. For the map's changes, Frank O'Connor had the following to say;

Easter Eggs
*If you look up at one of the many lights on the upper level with your back lined up along the wall looking at the light it appears to be in the shape of the Autobot symbol from the popular cartoon series the Transformers

The map saw a brief appearance during the Halo 3 Alternate reality game Iris in the Forerunner Email, where a wall closest to the red lift in the centre of the map was used and edited to include a Forerunner symbol.
Trivia
*Desolation is a remake of Derelict. In Desolation's official description, it is described as a "derelict forerunner structure awaiting to be reactivated." This is a obvious reference to the original map, Derelict.
*On Bungie.net, the images for Desolation are in the /derelict/ directory, another obvious reference to the former version of this level.
*Even though this is the official remake of Derelict, many people will not call it as such because of some differences.  The main one being that the original was not only not constructed the same way, but was in space rather than on a planet surface.
*Desolation was added to Halo 2 in the Blastacular Pack.
*Desolation is exclusive to the Xbox version of Halo 2 which is backwards compatible on Xbox 360.
*There is a way to stay stuck in midair using the grav lift. You need a rocket launcher and a grenades. What you do is, you get on the grav lift and try to even yourself on it so as it wont throw you forward, nor will you get off it by pushing back too much. When you reach the highest point of your bouncing, launch a rocket directly at the grav lift. You will eventually stop bouncing and you will be stuck in midair. To get unstuck, just do any movement that includes...well, moving. Keep in mind you you can still shoot from up there and look around. (you might need grenades in case the rockets don't work)
*You can find an M6C Pistol in the level.

It was not officially available for Halo 2 Vista, but modders were able to port Desolation to Halo 2 Vista. Like all Halo 2 maps, it is included in Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
*Along with Backwash, Desolation is the only level in the Halo Trilogy to spawn a Sentinel beam by default.
