The D77H-TCI Pelican  (Formal classification: Dropship 77 - Heavy - Troop Carrier/Infantry), more commonly known as the Pelican, is a model of the traditional D77-TC Pelican dropship.

Design
The D77H-TCI Pelican Dropship is a newer model of the venerable D77-TC Pelican , recently introduced into service within the UNSC Marine Corps and Navy in late 2552 and early 2553 (the Halo 3 era). It differs from the D77-TC in many respects, but is also improved in several ways.
Layout/Hull
As a dominant Pelican model for many decades, the D77H-TCI Pelican features a versatile airframe, a power-efficient thruster configuration, and dense ablative armor for quick-transfer deployments deep into foe-occupied area. Like the previous standard D77 model used during the Human-Covenant War, it features an extraordinary level of versality with regard to its arsenal, albeit parts with its forbearer in a variety of ways with several interior and exterior design differences. This includes most notably vertically staggered cockpit seats in tandem, with the co-pilot seated behind and above the pilot, instead of both crew sitting next to each other, and the controls and instrument panels are rearranged and upgraded. A small holotank is installed in the cockpit, allowing a "smart" AI to project its holographic avatar to the craft's pilots.

Armament
Background
The D77H-TCI Pelican's standard armament has two Anvil-II air-to-surface missile pods—which are integrated seamlessly into the fuselage rather than being externally mounted to the wings—and a rear-bay-mounted machine gun–typically an AIE-486H machine gun–in its troop bay for providing sufficient suppresive fire for supporting ground teams and loading or offloading personnel in contested sites, and covering the departure of its passengers, although this prevents it from carrying a vehicle internally. The ANVIL pods can fire up to twelve missiles at once, six from each pod. It may also features a trio of nose-mounted chainguns.

Powerplant/Propulsion
The D77H-TCI is a fleet wide upgrade to the UNSC's squadrons of Pelican Dropships, incorporating many differences from its older counterparts. First seen deployed in November, 2552 , the newer model assisted in the recovery effort to rescue Spartan-117 from the jungle region in Kenya, and evacuated wounded Marines from Crows Nest base as it suffered Covenant assault. Others would airlift Marines and equipment to reinforce the UNSC's attempts to retake Voi, coordinating with Hornet air forces.
The main engines are mounted in pairs in four nacelles, with one situated on each wing and two at the rear and posterior. The nacelles can articulate independently, thus altering the direction of thrust, referred to as vectoring in aviation; this improves the Pelican's low altitude maneuverability. Eight ventral thrusters are identified by markings and a rendered thrust effect, one on each wing nacelle and one on each aft nacelle, allow the drop ship to land and take off vertically. These engines are capable of both space and atmospheric operation. It has eight jet intakes, three on each side and two on top, though intakes are obviously not able to function in a vaccuum.

Crew and complement/Payload capacity
Later, D77H-TCI Pelicans would take part in the joint Elite-Human assault on the Covenant at Installation 00, inserting Spartan-117 and a team of ODST's to secure a landing zone for the Frigate Forward Unto Dawn and pick them up again as they discovered the location of the Prophet of Truth and his forces. A joint force of Pelicans and Elite Phantoms would deliver Spartan-117, the Arbiter and Sergeant Major A. J. Johnson to deactivate three shield generators protecting the Prophet's location, with several being taken down by Type-52 Anti Aircraft Artillery Wraiths and by Banshees, fighting their way to allow the Arbiter and Spartan-117 to assault the third generator. A D77H-TCI was used by Commander Miranda Keyes failed attempt to rescue Sergeant Johnson from Truth and his Brute forces, and was used by the Sergeant to escape from a Flood assault.
There are also differences in the bay of the craft: the so-called "blood tray". Although the D77H-TCI Pelican carries the same number of passengers as its predecessor, its troop-bay is more flexible, able to carry up to two M274 Mongoose internally, in addition to ten passengers. Like the original models, the D77H-TCI's tail-mounted magnetic clamps are capable of carrying an M12 Warthog, an M808 Scorpion, or several resupply canisters.

Variants
A D77H-TCI Pelican crashed on High Charity, which in turn crashed onto Installation 00, and was used by Spartan-117 and the Arbiter to rescue the UNSC AI Cortana, crashing the drop ship near Installation 04 (II)'s Control Room.
A gunship version of the D77H is in service; this heavily armed version is equipped with more chainguns, missiles, and a large cannon mounted at the ventral-fore of the dropship. Another configuration of the D77H Pelican were used by the Spirit of Fire crew during the Harvest campaign and Battle of the Etran Harborage.

*D77C-NMPD Pelican – A variant of the D77H-TCI and the Pelican itself with very few modifications made to the later over the former, and was utilized by the New Mombasa Police Department in Kenya, Africa, on Earth.

Though an upgrade, the D77H-TCI variant of the Pelican actually carriers fewer passengers than its predecessor, reduced to a maximum of eight rather than ten. However, its troop-bay is more flexible, able to carry up to two Mongoose's in addition to its passengers.
</gallery>

Its tail mounted magnetic clamps are capable of carrying a M12 Warthog LRV, M12G1 Warthog LAAG or M831 TT Warthog, an Scorpion MBT, or four Type CResupply Capsules rather than six Type B Resupply Capsules, to to the battlefield, able to detach its payload without landing. It is unknown if a variant exists with the D77-TC Pelican's troop-bay extension.

Service history
The D77H-TCI Pelican lacks the nose-mounted chingun of its predecessor, though it is able to mount an AIE-486H Heavy Machinegun in its troop-bay compartment for supporting ground teams and covering the ingress/egress of its passengers, an improvement from the previous M247 GPMG. Its wings can carry a missile-pod for engaging air or ground hostile units, which has proven effective against enemy Phantom Dropships and Covenant infantry, able to fire more missiles and faster than the older ANVIL-II ASM Pods. The D77H-TCI can also be equipped with a much larger cannon, mounted at the ventral-fore of the dropship. other than this, the D77H-TCI carries relatively few weapons.
Human-Covenant War
The D77H-TCI Pelican was introduced at least during the Insurrection and numerous, along with the original D77-TC Pelican, were as well deployed during the battles of the Human-Covenant War. During the Battle of Chi Ceti, the SPARTAN-II company used a D77H-TCI Pelican to make a boarding action against the Covenant Zanar Unrelenting by flying out of the Pelican with thruster packs to board the nearby enemy vessel.

Multiple D77H-TCI Pelicans were in use over course of Harvest campaign and later Battle for Arcadia and Battle of Trove, including one such Pelican with a woodland camouflage scheme that was used by the Sergeant John Forge and the Fire Team Lima to board the heavily damaged Prophecy to purge its NAV database and recover the survivors of the Marathon.
Propulsion
In the final year of the Great War, the D77H-TCI Pelicans may have been used during the Battle of Sigma Octanus IV and the Fall of Reach. An extensive number of D77H-TCI Pelicans was prominently deployed during the Battle for Earth, including during the final space battle against Prophet of Truth's loyalist armada led by Anodyne Spirit. They were again deployed extensively by the Battle Group Victory supported by the Sangheili separatist Fleet of Retribution during the Battle of Installation 00, the final battle of the war.
The main engines are mounted in pairs in four nacelles, one on each wing and two at the rear. The nacelles can articulate independently, thus altering (ie, Vectoring) the direction of thrust and improving the dropship's low altitude maneuverability. Six ventral thrusters, two on each wing nacelle and one on each aft nacelle, allow the Pelican to land and take off vertically. These engines are capable of both space and atmospheric operation. The Pelican is too small to have a slipspace matrix mounted on it.

In the aftermath of the Human-Covenant War, many D77H-TCI Pelicans remains in service even when they were supplanted by the D79-TC Pelican. Numerous D77H-TCI Pelicans were used against a splintered Covenant group during the Battle of Draetheus V in 2554. A number of D77H-TCI Pelicans were assigned to the Infinity, the flagship of UNSC Navy, and were deployed by the supercarrier notably during the Operation: WHISTLE STOP and WOLFE.
