The Cindershot fires ionized particle grenades consisting of "hyper-charged splinter cores", which explode seconds after launching, damaging anything caught in its explosion.{{Ref/Reuse|FF}} When fired while the optics are engaged, the weapon is able to guide the projectile with its aim, allowing the operator to manually guide the projectile onto a target.{{Ref/Reuse|Enc22}}

When reloading, the front of the Cindershot is pulled back, allowing more hard-light grenades to move to the front of the barrel, before it snaps back to its original position.{{Ref/Reuse|HINF}}

The Cindershot is a hardlight grenade launcher that serves a similar role to that of the {{Pattern|Tufasumo|plasma caster}}, but its explosion pulls in targets in close proximity. The projectile must ricochet from a surface once before detonating at the next point of impact. The Cindershot has an alt-fire mode that allows the projectile to follow the wielder's direction. The projectiles are capable of killing a Spartan in two direct explosions.
