The Cavemen are a series of Easter eggs on the Halo 3 level, Sierra 117, and the Halo 3: ODST epilogue, where you can find ape-like figures with Marcus Lehto's face.
There is an Easter Egg on the Halo 3 level, "Sierra 117", you can find a family of four cavemen (or possibly monkeys) with Marcus Lehto's face. They all vary in size, with the largest holding what appears to be a teddy bear.
Guide
To find the cavemen family (or monkeys/apes as some people call them), go past the point where Sergeant Major Avery Johnson says his Pelican got shot down. Then, enter the jungle and stick to the left wall. You will have to climb over some rocks and then there's a giant rock in the way and you crouch under a tight ledge to find them. You can shoot them but not kill them, although, blood will still spurt out. Which shows that the respawn cycle is not set up so they wont die. There is a link to a tutorial here on Youtube.

First caveman
Recently found, there is a monkey man sitting on a cliff outside the level, in the area where you rescue Sergeant Major Johnson. He is accessible by means of a glitch, but he is still visible by using a scoped weapon such as a sniper or the binoculars. To get where the Cavemen is, you must play in at least two players cooperative play. It is much easy by using a gravity hammer, this may be the reason why the chieftain was put there. When you are there you can keep running and get out of the level.
The first Caveman can be found in the area where Sergeant Major Avery Johnson's Pelican is shot down. Across the water, above and to the right where a Kig-Yar Sniper will spawn on Heroic and Legendary difficulties, the first Caveman can be seen sitting in a tree. Unlike the other Cavemen, there is no way to reach him.

They all vary in size, with the largest holding what appears to be a teddy bear, and the smallest being half the size of said teddy bear.
*When you shoot any caveman, it will bleed, but if you do anything that would normally kill anything (i.e. grenade, getting "headshots") nothing will happen because they have no death animation. Similarly, if you shoot the teddy bear, blood will come out too.
*The Lone Caveman also has a face similar to Marcus Lehto's face.fact
*All of the Cavemen are identical, scaled down versions of each other (except for the biggest one with the teddy bear).
*If viewed with a sniper, there seems to be a stick figure (cave drawing) obviously drawn by the cave men in the dark corner behind them.
*This, along with all of the different Jason Jones Easter Eggs, suggests that the Bungie workers enjoy putting themselves in their games for fun.
*They look of monkey decent with human heads.
*They will not appear on easy.
*All cavemen have a poor graphic job compared to most of things in the game.

During the epilogue cinematic, after the final level of Halo 3: ODST, Coastal Highway. When Vergil lights Johnson's cigar during the interrogation, push the right thumbstick to the left on the controller and the scene will pan over to the left. You will see Edward Buck touch a Caveman similar to the ones in the first level of Halo 3. He will then groom it, and appear to eat something taken from its hair; however, you will only see him raise his hand towards his mouth, as the scene will black out immediately thereafter.

Trivia
*When you shoot any caveman, it will bleed, but if you do anything that would normally kill anything (i.e. grenade or a headshot), nothing will happen, no matter how many times you do this, because they have no scripted death animation. Also, if you shoot the teddy bear, blood will come out.
*All the cavemen are identical in look, but they are all different.
*If viewed with a sniper rifle, there seems to be a stick figure cave drawn by the cavemen in the dark corner behind them.
*Both the Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST cavemen Easter Eggs are mentioned in a Cracked.com article called 7 Creepy Video Game Easter Eggs You'll Wish Were Never Found.
