===Design details===

The C712 Longsword is a multirole space fighter, and its weapons loadout can be easily modified for different mission requirements. It has eight [[Machine-linked autocannon#M9109 ASW/AC 50mm|M9109 coilguns]] that fire 50mm rounds at enemy fighters and ground forces during tactical strikes.{{Ref/Book|Id=EVG|EVG|Page=112}} There are four [[ASGM-10 missile]]s, which are specialized for use against single targets such as the [[Covenant]] [[Seraph]], although they are powerful enough to deal significant damage to targets not protected by [[energy shield]]s.{{Ref/Game|Id=CEALibrary|HCEA|Library (feature)|Library|Detail=Longsword}} These are typically housed in a rotary launcher within the internal ordnance bay, to protect the missiles prior to launch. If needed, it can replace its anti-ship missiles with conventional smart bombs, satellites, or special mission payloads.{{Ref/Reuse|WF}}

During the [[Fall of Reach]], two Longswords were launched against a Covenant {{Pattern|Ceudar|heavy corvette}} to [[First Battle of Sword Base|protect]] [[SWORD Base]]. The Longswords pushed the corvette away from the base far enough for a Super MAC round fired from orbit to take it out.{{Ref/Level|HR|ONI: Sword Base}} Longswords also participated in the [[Battle at Szurdok Ridge]] after [[SPARTAN-B312]] took out two Covenant {{Pattern|Cheru|Tyrant}} anti-aircraft emplacements, clearing the way for air support. The Longswords were able to destroy three {{Pattern|Deutoros|Scarab}}s, opening the path for the UNSC's ground assault force.{{Ref/Level|HR|Tip of the Spear}}

During the opening stages of the [[Battle for Earth]], a pair of longswords bombed the unshielded {{Pattern|Syfon|assault carrier}} ''[[Day of Jubilation]]'', exposing its [[pinch fusion reactor]] and allowing [[John-117]] to fly in and detonate a recently acquired {{Pattern|Chershi|antimatter charge|}} [[antimatter charge]] inside the carrier.{{Ref/Level|H2A|Cairo Station}} Numerous longswords participated in the [[Battle of Voi]] as escorts for [[Battle Group Victory]] in their attack on ''[[Anodyne Spirit]]'', with at least one shot down by a {{Pattern|Skar'wa|Mantis}}.{{Ref/Level|H3|The Storm}} During the [[Battle of Installation 00]], one damaged longsword crashed into the surface of [[the Ark]].{{Ref/Level|H3|The Ark (level)|The Ark}}

==Production notes==

The design for the C712 Longsword was first introduced as a redesign for the craft in ''[[Halo 3]]'', with the ship seen in use at various points in the campaign. It later returned as a background object in ''[[Halo: Reach]]''. The redesigned Longsword can be primarily differentiated from the original with its smaller size, the lack of forward intakes, the fins on the front of the ship between the cockpit and wings, and bulkier engines built into the wings. The ''Reach'' model was reused in ''[[Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary]]'' to represent the C709 Longsword seen in that game; however, as of the ''[[Halo Encyclopedia (2022 edition)]]'', the C709 is canonically considered to be the design originating from ''[[Halo: Combat Evolved]]'' and ''[[Halo 2]]''. As such, the use of the C712's model in ''Anniversary'' is effectively a non-canonical depiction of the craft.
