BxR, is a button combo present in Halo 2 and in Halo 3. The button combination allows players to melee and instantaneously fire their weapon, and it is performed by pressing B+X+R. Alternatively, B+Y+Y+R can be used.

BXR is a somewhat-complicated move that can be used with any weapon within Halo 2. The procedure involved has the player pressing the buttons, "B, X, R" in rapid succession, causing a melee attack instantly followed by round(s) from whatever weapon the user is holding.

Description
This move is most often used in Team Hardcore by those experienced with the Battle Rifle, where it becomes an immensely effective combat type, for the strike will first take down shields, and if aimed right can provide an instant kill.
The button combo works by taking down the shields first before shooting and, if aimed right, can provide an instant kill.

Halo 2
Melee Fire: B,X,R or B,Y,Y,R
The attack works by first meleeing. Once the melee hits the opponent and does damage, the attacker cancels the remainder of the melee animation (and the delay after the melee) by pressing X. The attacker can then instantaneously open fire, without waiting for the now-canceled melee delay to elapse. The trick only works with a full magazine, however, as pressing X with a partially empty magazine will cause the player to reload, preventing them from opening fire at all; the exception is when players do not have any spare magazines remaining, in which case they cannot reload. The exception also allows players to chain BXR.
As soon as your melee has hit your opponent and the damage is done, you can cancel the rest of the animation with X and open fire again. If done optimal it will seem like a melee and shot at the same time. To be done with a full magazine or using Y,Y instead of X when not. Strangely enough, you will automatically get a full magazine some time after a BXR, even if you shoot. Also works with sniper, but preferably press X before the melee hits so you are still moving towards your opponent and can get a clean snipe.
Note - When you don't have ammo to reload your battle rifle, you can keep doing B,X,R

If a player has a partially empty magazine, they can press Y twice instead of pressing X once. Pressing Y switches weapons and cancels melee animations; pressing it twice switches from and then back to the current weapon. However, this method will take slightly longer to do, which can be critical in battle situations. In some situation, players will automatically get a full magazine some time after a BXR, even if you shoot. This may be the result of some odd error that delays the reload (X) action.
On a second note when using the Battle Rifle you must have a full magazine. Attempting a B,X,R with any ammunition missing will cause a shot and reload, failing in the attempt of the attack. however, if all of you ammo is expended except for the currently loaded magazine (you have no more ammo to reload, only what is in the gun) you can BXR constantly (until the magazine is expended)

Halo 3 and Halo: Reach
Like many other button combinations, Bungie worked hard to prevent the Melee Fire from appearing in Halo 3. However, a similar combo can be used by pressing RT and RB in rapid succession. By pressing RT before RB, a shot is fired immediately before meleeing. It works best with single-shot weapons such as the Sniper Rifle, enabling a very fast kill. While attempting to use this trick with a battle rifle, if done incorrectly, the rifle will only fire one or two shots.

Most players, though, have adopted the B+A+R. This allows a player to melee, jump backwards and shoot a target while in midair.
Halo 3
As it was unintentionally put into Halo 2, there is no Melee Shot in Halo 3. However, a similar effect to the melee fire is able to be executed in Halo 3, by pressing RT and B in rapid succesion. By pressing RT before B, a shot is fired immediately before meleeing. It works best with single shot weapons such as the sniper rifle, enabling a very fast kill. While attempting to use this trick with a Battle Rifle, if done incorrectly, the rifle will only fire 1 or 2 shots. Although this is not an exact version of BXR, it is a very similar tactic that works in Halo 3.  Also, most players have adopted the B-A-R. This allows the player to melee, jump backwards and shoot the player while in the air.

Miscellaneous
As stated above the Melee Shot was unintentional and not included in Halo 3. This is true as far as on line game play is concerned. There is a method of the Melee Shot that works in off line play though. To perform this you must press RT,RT,Y,B on the default button layout. This performs a shot followed by a beat and a delayed second shot that, when executed correctly, fires at the unshielded head of the opponent. This results in a kill within the time span of a beat.
*In Halo 2, and when playing Halo 3 offline, an additional button combo becomes available: RT+RT+Y+B. This performs a shot followed by a melee and a second shot that, when executed correctly, fires at the unshielded head of the target. This results in a kill within the timespan of a melee.
Note - this is only confirmed to work with the Battle Rifle. It is also confirmed to work in Halo 2.

Trivia
*A mining corporation called BXR Industries appears in Halo: Reach, which is a reference to this button combo.
