==Biography==
He is the son of [[Raia 'Mdama]] and [[Jul ‘Mdama]], although he did not know who his father was as it is custom for Sangheili not to reveal the name of the father, so that they are solely judged on their abilities and not their heritage. He and his brother [[Dural 'Mdama|Dural]] lived in the [[State of Mdama]] and were taught combat by [[Naxan]] in the [[Bekan keep]]. Following the death of his mother, Asum went to the nearby fields to mourn in private.<ref>''Halo: The Thursday War'', Epilogue</ref> Now orphaned, Asum was fostered by [[Kasha 'Hilot]] and assumed the name Bakar.{{Ref/Reuse|loo}}

While attending the [[Pax Institute]] on the [[shield world]] known as [[Sarcophagus]], Asum became friends with [[Molly Patel]], [[Kareem El-Hashem]], and [[Gudam Keschun]].{{Ref/Reuse|loo}}

==Personality==
Asum was deeply hurt by his mother's passing. As a result, he chose to lead a life of non-violence, preferring to reason with aggressors rather than immediately settling disputes with force, all in spite of the fury he would display, demonstrating his self-control. This is exceptionally uncommon for Sangheili, especially males. He held no love for his uncle, Jul, whom he blames for abandoning him and Dural after his mother perished, but was still devastated when he learned of Jul's role as Asum's father. He regretted not being able to reconcile with his father upon learning of his death, but understood its significance  His non-violent lifestyle and eventual friendship with Molly and the others have lead Asum to be an outcast among the Sangheili youth at Sarcophagus.
