'''Armor coatings''', also known as '''armor skins''', are an element of player customization in ''[[Halo Infinite]]''. They are a seven layer system that change the materials and coloration of a player's [[Armor customization (Halo Infinite)|armor permutation]].{{Ref/Site|URL=https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/news/colorful-column|Site=Halo Waypoint|Page=Colorful Column|D=30|M=7|Y=2021}}

Coatings act much like base color selection in previous ''Halo'' titles. By default, ''Halo Infinite'' features an array of average colors for the player to use for free. Additional coatings can be earned through the [[Battle Pass|game's multiple battle passes]], [[Event|events]], and [[Challenges/Halo Infinite|challenges]]. Some coatings could only be obtained through [[Halo Infinite promotional content|promotional campaigns]] and the release of certain toys and collectibles that started in [[2020]]. Exclusive coatings, such as Watchdog and Master Builder, can only be obtained through acts such as reaching [[Rank (Halo 5: Guardians)|SR-152]] in ''[[Halo 5: Guardians]]'', or managing to get a map featured in a playlist in ''Infinite'' respectively. Finally, a majority of coatings can be purchased, either individually, or through [[Shop Bundles|bundles]] that rotate in through ''Infinite's'' [[Shop]].

While not every coating is compatible across every armor core, updates from the [[Winter Update]] through to [[Content Update 29]] have made the majority viable to use across all available armor cores. Additionally, new coatings released for [[Season 04: Infection]] onwards are naturally compatible across all armor cores.

===Changes===
Between their unveiling and release, certain armor coatings underwent changes, ranging from minor to major. These include:
*The Granular coating, the render of which originally displayed a predominantly cyan Spartan with green accents. The techsuit of said Spartan was yellow and red. The final version of the coating has the player's Spartan taking on a primarily yellow color, with some minor red, blue, and green accents, while their techsuit is fully black. In the final game, the [[343 Industries]]-exclusive armor coating, Unicorn Dream, bears a large resemblance to the pre-release version of Granular.

*The Primal Glory coating was formerly known as "Grassroots" before being updated prior to its release as a Twitch drop. No aesthetic changes occurred.
*The Red Shift coating, which underwent a more subtle change, with most wear and tear seen on the pre-release render being removed from the final product. Additionally, most colors on the coating appeared to be much brighter.
**It was announced in the [https://www.halowaypoint.com/news/season-1-outcomes-report-live Season 1 Outcomes Report] that the Red Shift coating, along with the Watchdog coating, will be updated to be more in line with previously released renders. On March 6, 2023, it was announced that Red Shift's updated variant, now known as "Shred Shift", would arrive with [[Season 03: Echoes Within]]'s release.

*The Scarlet series of coatings, Scarlet Empress, Scarlet Skies, and Scarlet Wake, were subject to a change with the release of Season 03. Like Untethered Wind, the Scarlet coatings utilized the Cadet Red color palette, which was subsequently made free and default to all players. The newer variations of the Scarlet coatings utilize a more metallic shade of red, replace areas on the armor with silver, or deep black, and also utilize different techsuit textures compared to the originals.
*The Splinter Desert coating was subject to a near unnoticeable tweak, with the original promotional image for the coating showing the camouflage pattern on the Spartan's shin area of their techsuit. The final coating would opt to keep the shin region entirely brown.

*The Untethered Wind coating was subject to a large overhaul, following the December update during ''Halo Infinite's'' [[Winter Update]]. Originally, the coating utilized the Cadet Blue color palette, however, with the addition of the Cadet coatings across all current armor cores lacking them, Untethered Wind was changed to feature a brighter blue, silver and white in place of muted gray, cyan lighting over orange, and finally, a new, shinier techsuit texture.

*The Vermillion Flame coating on the Yoroi armor core featured a minor change between Season 03 and Season 04, with one of the skirt armor's lights being changed to white, rather than the metallic red of the coating it originally was.

*The Watchdog coating, which, like Red Shift, underwent a subtle change, where the silver seen on the coating's pattern was much more muted than pre-release renders.
**It was announced in the [https://www.halowaypoint.com/news/season-1-outcomes-report-live Season 1 Outcomes Report] that the Watchdog coating, along with the Red Shift coating, will be updated to be more in line with previously released renders. During a community playdate on December 14, 2022, an updated coating, "Watchdog Neo", was shown off and slated for release with Season 03. Looking near identical to the original Watchdog coating shown off in late 2020, Watchdog Neo will be added alongside the original, allowing players to keep both the old and new versions of Watchdog. Additionally, Neo will be added to newer cores released since 2021, which includes [[RAKSHASA-class Mjolnir|Rakshasa]], [[Eaglestrike]], [[MIRAGE-class Mjolnir|Mirage]], and [[Chimera (armor)|Chimera]].
